Internal Hotel Tools
Internal Hotel Tools
Role: Product, Design Systems
Client: Priceline
Date: 2018-2019
The hotel team at priceline utilizes a number of internal tools to help them manage and maintain various hotel content for the business. The maintenance and improvement of these tools is especially important to our internal users spanning a few different organizations.
The Task
Consolidation via
Design System
We were tasked to apply the Priceline One design system to some existing internal applications while also adding additional functionality, and improving any problem areas identified through internal user interviews.
The Challenge
Many Applications
One Fluid System
User interviews uncovered a need for us to re-think user flows for specific tasks within some of the applications. We needed to ensure our internal users were still able to access the functionality they needed to be able to continue accomplishing their usual tasks as well as begin to solve the current workflow issues they were experiencing.
All the tools varied in age from 5-20+ years old. With the push to reevaluate each tool and slowly sync them with our external design system, those systems all needed to be updated and work within react.
The Hurdles
Sometimes Division
is a Good Thing
With the various tools being worked on at different times and by different scrum teams, a large challenge was thinking forward to build patterns and components fluidly. This would give us room for updates and changes in the future.
Internal stakeholder interviews enabled us to better prioritize all the changes and breakup the updates into leaner tickets that could be tackled at different times throughout the quarter.
The Solution
Out With The Old,
In With The New…. Slowly
Through a number of sprints we’ve rebuilt 2 applications, made major updates to the 2 other applications, and have a few in queue for later this year. In doing so, we were able to establish some internal patterns that can be used for multiple applications as well.
Additionally, the internal applications are better synced with the elements used in the external facing applications. This sets us up for better efficiency in component versioning updates, as well as creates consistency between the internal tools and customer facing products.
